During the September-October mating season, bull elk stage their own passion play of sorts. The characteristic rutting call of bulls can be heard from just before dusk to dawn. Here’s a short video sample.

Earlier this month, myself and two other (Ken Curry and Dan Wilcut) backpacked a few miles into a state wildlife park to bugle elk.  Unfortunately, we only were able to see one elk, and it didn’t even bugle for us.  We think the warm weather either delayed the mating season or that we had just missed the rut.  Either way, the terrain was beautiful in its autumn colors plus it is was good to just be with the guys.
