Shortly after vacation my nephew flew in to visit from Michigan.  Ivan had a blast playing with Silas.  They had fun swimming together, going to the playground, museum, creek, making and eating popsicles, reading Garfield and building forts.

The three of us flew together to Seattle where his parents and my parents met up and we all spent a week together in Birch Bay, WA.  My cousin was getting married in Bellingham so Nick flew up from work just for the weekend.  The boys really enjoyed the bay especially low tide when they could dig up rocks and shells and splash in the water.  The house we rented also had video games so they enjoyed playing against each other and the adults.

My cousin is an animal lover and her wedding shows that. Instead of attendants she had her beloved pets!  It was unique but fun to experience. Ivan loved watching the animals.

Ivan and I were able to take a trip to AZ to see Ivan’s Reimer Grandparents for a week.  My mom actually was waiting for some news from the Dr so it was a great distraction to be there. Ivan loved going to the pool to splash Grandpa. We also enjoyed going to the train museum, library, playground and mini golf. The RV place they are parked at this winter has a great facility of pools and mini golf and live music.  We delighted all the people living there on walks and then were able to sweetly ask for rides on golf carts a couple of times.  One couple even let Ivan pick some grapefruit off of their tree, and it was delicious! As always Ivan was a great traveler and spread love and joy every where we went.

We had the privilege of being invited to go on vacation with a Nick’s uncle (who was celebrating turning 50) and some of his friends. It was over Thanksgiving which is a holiday we usually try to stay home for, however this was a great opportunity. I flew down with Ivan the day before his birthday to squeeze in one final free flight and Nick joined 2 days later.

We stayed in Playa Del Carmen at a resort.  I felt very pampered staying at a resort. I didn’t have to cook, clean, drive or really entertain Ivan for 12 days!!  He loved the beach, so all we really had to do was take him and he would dig and dig and play for so long.  We of course enjoyed playing with him, but it was also such a joy to just watch him having fun. Nick really challenged him to get in the water with the waves as well as conquer the “big slides” at the Aqua Center. Ivan also loved all the animals that we found on the resort: monkeys, donkeys, chickens, roosters, bunnies, ducks, birds, raccoons, macaws, peacocks, and coatis.

Ivan was such a blessing to others with his smile and pleasant demeanor.  We made quite a few friends of the staff from cleaning to building to restaurant workers. The resort had different evenings with shows telling about the Mayan culture, and legends. Ivan saw parts of some of the shows and really enjoyed the “dancing owl”.

We were able to do a day excursion to Tulum, a Mayan Ruin site discovered in the 80’s.  We had a private tour for our group which was nice. It included free time to walk around and shop as well.  We also had a terrific day on a private boat that we all pitched in together to rent.  So Thanksgiving was spent on the water! We swam in the ocean, ate on the beach at Isla Mujeres, snorkeled at some reefs, held (photo opportunity) a shark, and just relaxed in the sun on the boat while it coasted along!  What a great way to celebrate and be thankful for our so many blessings.

Here is a video of our highlights!

img_0042This fall has been the 5th warmest in CO history.  We have taken full advantage by getting outdoors and enjoying all the parks and playgrounds near by.  Ivan would still be swimming if it were up to him.  He loves the pool and water.  Thankfully we have indoor ones to enjoy. Anyway, we were able to take a trip up to Bellingham, WA to see my parents and grandparents for a week the end of September. We enjoyed mostly sunny days up there.  We also went to the CO Mennonite Central Committee Sale in La Junta, CO to see Nicolas’ family.  Nick had a great idea of carving a pumpkin so Ivan could sit in it.  It turned out really cute, then it got a happy face, thanks to our neighbor.  Finally I took him trick or treating with some friends in their neighborhood for Halloween. He enjoyed the idea of collecting treats, even though he doesn’t know what candy is and didn’t get to eat any of it.  😉  I can still control that, for now!

Wow, it’s April already and we have had some fun spring family time that I haven’t written about.  Kara and Ivan went down to AZ to visit the Reimer grandparents in March and the Hostetler clan all came out to CO for skiing and spring break.  We have also had the annual MCC relief sale already this April.  Ivan is growing so much and learning so much. Everyone enjoys his smile and wave.

Ivan and I braved the airport together and went to visit his Reimer great grandparents. It was fun to see them enjoy his smile and laughter.  He figured out how to walk holding onto Grandpa’s walker!  We were also able to see and connect with Aunt LeAnn and her husband, Ken and her daughter, Amanda. We stayed with Grandpa Ed Karber and enjoyed the space to relax and hang out.  A special event for Grandma was being able to go to serve at the Louisa House (a local nursing home) with 4 generations of her family.  Ivan loved giving everyone smiles and waves!

We had a quick opportunity to visit Kara’s family on an extended weekend in Seattle area.  We flew in town Saturday and after picking up the rental car went to pick up my parents and drive north to Bellingham, WA.  We visited my grandparents who are both in their 90’s and still live on their own.  They are doing very well despite many adversities. It was great to see them again and they enjoyed meeting Ivan.

We also spent some time with some other adopted grandparents the Karber family.  Grandma is in a home as she has Alzheimer’s, but it was fun to watch her light up when she saw Ivan.  After a fun weekend we headed back to Seattle on Monday to spend time with some more extended family.  Nick had a training to attend at Microsoft Tuesday and Wednesday so I got to explore Seattle with my parents and my Aunt. It was a bit fast and furious, but fun.
